From Concept to Shelf: Glass Bottle Design

A premium glass bottle passes through many hands before reaching the consumer. Understanding this journey helps brands make better decisions at every stage — and identifies where decoration adds the most value.

Concept and Briefing

The process starts with a brand brief. This defines the target market, price positioning, visual direction and sustainability requirements. For perfume bottles and flacons, the brief often includes references to fragrance family, brand heritage and retail context.

Glass Selection

The brand or its packaging agency selects a glass format from manufacturers like Saverglass, Verescence or Heinz-Glas. Mould shape, weight, glass colour and surface finish are specified. Some projects require custom moulds; others use existing catalogue shapes.

Decoration Design

With the glass format confirmed, decoration design begins. Designers create artwork mapped to the bottle's geometry. Digital sublimation gives them complete creative freedom — no colour limitations, no simplification for plates. ATIU provides bottle-specific templates to ensure accurate layout.

Proofing and Approval

ATIU produces physical samples on the actual glass. The client reviews colour accuracy, detail and overall appearance. Digital pre-press tools reduce the number of proofing rounds. Once approved, the design moves to production.

Production and Quality Control

Sublimation transfers the approved design onto every bottle in the run. ISO 9001 quality processes ensure consistency. Each bottle is inspected before packing.

Logistics and Delivery

Decorated bottles are packed and shipped to the brand's filling line or distribution centre. ATIU coordinates delivery timing from our two Verona plants to align with filling schedules — minimising storage costs and inventory risk.

How early should a brand involve the decoration partner in the design process?

As early as possible. Involving the decoration partner during glass selection ensures that the bottle format, surface finish and colour are optimised for the intended decoration. This avoids costly revisions later in the process.

How many proofing rounds are typical for sublimation?

Most projects require one to two proofing rounds. Digital pre-press tools allow accurate colour prediction before the first physical sample, reducing iteration. Simple designs may be approved in a single round.
