The Model Maker's Impact on Perfumery
Before a perfume bottle reaches the shelf, it passes through the hands of a model maker — the maquettiste. This specialist transforms a designer's sketch into a three-dimensional prototype that defines the bottle's physical reality.
From Sketch to Object
Perfume bottle design starts with creative direction: mood boards, sketches, material references. The model maker translates these two-dimensional ideas into physical forms. Using 3D printing, hand-sculpting and CNC machining, they create precise prototypes that reveal how the bottle feels, catches light and occupies space. This stage determines the final glass mould specification sent to manufacturers like Heinz-Glas or Saverglass.
Decoration Begins at the Model Stage
Smart brands involve their decoration partner early. At ATIU, we work with model makers and brand designers to assess how sublimation artwork will interact with the bottle's geometry. Curves, facets, shoulder transitions and base profiles all influence how a printed image wraps the surface. Early collaboration prevents costly revisions after the glass mould is finalised.
Prototyping Decorated Bottles
ATIU can produce sublimated samples on prototype glass, allowing brands to evaluate the full decorated bottle before committing to production. This is particularly valuable for perfume bottles and flacons, where the relationship between form, colour and surface treatment defines the product experience.
The Maquettiste's Legacy
In an increasingly digital world, the model maker's craft endures. Their ability to bridge creative vision and manufacturing reality remains essential to luxury perfumery. Combined with digital sublimation's design freedom, this collaboration delivers packaging that is both physically refined and visually extraordinary.
From our Verona plants, ATIU supports this process for brands including groups such as PUIG and LVMH, decorating glass from Verescence, Bormioli Luigi and Stoelzle.
